How Taken
Zyban is produced in tablets for oral use. The usual dose is twice a day and may be taken alone or in combination with food. It is important the tablets to be swollen whole. They should not be chewed, divided or crushed.
Warnings/Precautions
Zyban should not be used if you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days. Zyban is in the FDA pregnancy category B. It is not likely to be harmful to an unborn baby. In case of pregnancy, Zyban should not be taken without first consulting your doctor. It is not declared whether this drug passes into breast milk. Do not take Zyban without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. This means that it is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take a dose, just take it as soon as you remember. If it is too close to the next dose, leave the missed one and follow your normal dose schedule. Do not take two doses at a time in order to catch up. This is important so you do not increase your chance of having a seizure.
Possible Side Effects
Possible side effects may include hypertension (high blood pressure), in some cases severe, when taking Zyban alone or in combination with nicotine replacement therapy (for example nicotine patch). Among the most common side effects are dry mouth and difficulty sleeping. Such side effects are usually mild and often disappear after a few weeks. In case you have difficulty sleeping, you should avoid taking your medicine too close to bedtime. If you observe symptoms such as shakiness and skin rash, discontinue treatment and contact your doctor. You should do that also if you experience an allergic reaction such as a rash, hives, or difficulty in breathing. It is not possible to predict whether a mild rash will develop into a more serious reaction. If you experience a skin rash, fever, hives, swollen lymph glands, painful sores in the mouth or around the eyes, or swelling of lips or tongue, alarm a doctor immediately, as these symptoms may indicate a further serious reaction. If you have any unusual conditions, contact your physician.
Storage
Keep Zyban at normal room temperature, protect from direct sunlight. Make sure Zyban is put in a tightly closed container. Keep away from children.
Overdose
If you doubt an overdose, seek instant medical help. Possible overdose symptoms regarding the use of Zyban may include hallucinations, seizures, loss of consciousness, a fast heartbeat, weakness, and a heart attack.
More Information
You should avoid the use of alcohol or at least in very small dose, as this may increase the risk of having a seizure. However, if you have the habit of consuming large amount of alcohol, you should consult your doctor as the sudden stop may also increase the risk of having a seizure. Consult your doctor about alcohol use before starting treatment with Zyban.
