Drug Uses
Paxil is an agent that belongs to a newer class of antidepressant medication known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Depression and anxiety disorders are usually caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. One of these brain chemicals is serotonin, which is responsible for the sending of electrical signals between the nerve cells. In the process, serotonin is released from one nerve cell (the sender) and travels to the next (the receiver), where it is either absorbed or returns back to the original sender cell.
How Taken
Paxil is purposed for oral use. The usual dose is once a day and it ma be taken in combination with food or alone. You should not take bigger or smaller doses or use it more frequently than prescribed. Do not stop treatment even if you feel a lot better. If you decide to discontinue treatment, first consult your doctor especially in case you have been using the drug for a long time in large doses. Your doctor most probably will prefer to lower your doses gradually. This drug needs to be taken regularly before showing its full effect.
Warnings/Precautions
Before starting treatment with Paxil, inform your doctor if you suffer from kidney disease, seizures or epilepsy, liver disease, a manic disorder or suicidal thoughts. In any of these cases, it is possible that you may not be able to take Paxil, or you may need a special dosage adjustment or special medical observation during treatment. Paxil is in the FDA pregnancy category C. There is not any information if it can cause any harm to an unborn baby. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or if there is a chance to get pregnant during treatment. Paxil is known to get into breast milk and it may have negative influences on a nursing infant. Consult your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take a dose, just take it as soon as you remember if it is not later than 1 hour. If it is too close to the next dose, leave the missed one and follow your normal dose schedule. Do not take two doses at a time in order to catch up.
Possible Side Effects
In case you observe any of the following side effects, discontinue the acceptance of Paxil and get an instant medical help: an irregular heartbeat or pulse; an allergic reaction (breathing difficulties. Throat closing; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); low blood pressure (dizziness, weakness); high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision); unusual bleeding or bruising; or fever or chills. Other less serious side effects are also possible to occur. In this case there is no need to stop treatment but you still need to call your doctor. Such possible light side effects may include: tremor, headache, nervousness; nausea, anxiety, diarrhea, or changes in appetite or weight; dry mouth, sleepiness or insomnia, impotence, decreased sex drive or difficulty having an orgasm. Beside the listed symptoms, there are also other not mentioned, that can also appear. Tell your doctor about any unusual conditions that you may experience during treatment with Paxil.
Storage
Keep at average room temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F).
Overdose
In case of an overdose, seek emergency medical attention. Overdose symptoms may include vomiting, nausea, tremor, agitation, seizures, drowsiness, hyperactivity, and enlarged pupils.
More Information
As Paxil may lead to drowsiness and dizziness, be cautious while driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. If you feel dizzy or drowsy, avoid these activities. Be careful when consuming alcohol. It may increase drowsiness or dizziness while taking Paxil.
