Effexor XR is a potent inhibitor of the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine- neurotransmitters which play a significant role in depression pathophysiology. The balancing of these chemicals contribute to helping relieve depression symptoms.
How Taken
Effexor XR is used orally. The usual dose is once a day in combination with food. Each capsule should be taken whole with liquid and should not be chewed, divided, crushed or placed in water. It can also be consumed by carefully opening the capsule and adding the contents to a spoonful of applesauce. The mixture have to be immediately swallowed without chewing and after followed by a glass of water so that you can be sure that the pellets are completely swallowed.
Warnings/Precautions
Before beginning any treatment with Effexor XR, inform your doctor about any other drugs that you may be taking including drugs with no doctor’s prescription and herbal supplements. If you take MAOIs, do not take Effexor XR. In case you are taking antidepressants you need to be closely watched whether your condition is getting worse or if you have suicidal thoughts, especially in the beginning of the treatment or when your doses are being changed. You also have to be observed for showing irritation, hastily, impulsiveness, and restlessness. In case of such symptoms, instantly contact your doctor. Effexor XR is possible to cause blood pressure increase and that is why you need to monitor your blood on a regular basis. If you suddenly stop using Effexor XP or you decrease your dose, it is possible to occur discontinuation symptoms. Consult your doctor before discontinuing or reducing your dose of Effexor XR. If you are pregnant or nursing, it is essential to inform your doctor first before starting treatment with Effexor XP. You need to know how this drug influences your reactions and should be cautious when driving or operating machinery. Alchol should be avoided during therapy.
Missed Dose
If you forget to take a dose, just dot as soon as you remember. If it is too close to the next dose, leave the missed one and follow your normal dose schedule. Do not take two doses at a time in order to catch up.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects may include: severe high blood pressure (blurred vision, headache), irregular heartbeat, seizure, an allergic reaction (breathing difficulties; throat closing; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives); seizures; or an irregular heartbeat or severely high blood pressure (blurred vision, headache). In the following cases you need to immediately contact your physician and find medical help. There can occur other less serious side effects, in which case you should not stop therapy. Inform your physician if you have any of the following complaints: increased blood cholesterol levels (detected by blood tests), nausea, upset stomach, vomiting, abdominal pain, dry mouth; or loss of appetite or weigh, drowsiness or dizziness; anxiety, mild tremor, agitation; insomnia; abnormal dreams; sexual problems such as impotence, abnormal ejaculation, difficulty reaching orgasm, or decreased libido,yawning; ; sweating; There can also occur side effects that are not mentioned. Consult your doctor about any unusual condition you experience.
Storage
Keep at average room temperature (68F to 77F or 20C to 25C). Make sure it is out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, seek emergency medical attention. Overdose symptoms are irregular heartbeat, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, numbness, seizures, and unconsciousness.
